Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve is the largest saline lake in northwest China, and the site of a major outbreak of HP H5N1 in wild waterfowl in 2005. In March and April 2007, an international team from U. S. Geological Survey (
Western Ecological Research Center,
Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and
Alaska Science Center),
United Nations-FAO,
Chinese Academy of Sciences (Computer Network Information Center, Institute of Zoology, Microbiology, Virology, and NW Institute of Qinghai Plateau Biology), and Qinghai Lakes National Nature Reserve developed a project satellite-marking bar-headed geese and ruddy shelducks at Qinghai Lake to track their movements and migration routes.
