Scientific name: Batrachoseps gabrieli
Common name: San Gabriel Mountain Slender Salamander
Size: 1.25-2.0 in (3.1-5.0 cm)
Distinguishing characters: A large species; worm-like body, large head and limbs; elongate cylindrical tail less than 1.5 times body length; black dorsum with white/coppery/orange blotches; immaculate black venter; may have red spots on tail.
Juveniles: Similar to adults.
Dimorphism: None
Similar species: Batrachoseps pacificus: Lacks white spots on dorsum; paler overall coloration. Batrachoseps nigriventris: Lacks white spots on dorsum, and has white dots on black underside.
Additional notes: Only known from San Gabriel Canyon system; typically above 1,000 meters in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County.
