Scientific name: Sceloporus magister 
Common name: Desert Spiny Lizard
Size: 3.25-5.5 in (8.1-13.7 cm)
Distinguishing characters: A large, robust species; dorsal scales strongly keeled and pointed on body and tail; black partial collar behind neck; yellow to tan dorsal coloration.
Juveniles: Small blotches and crossbands on body evident.
Dimorphism: Male has deep blue ventral patches on chest and throat and has femoral pores; female head color is reddish when breeding.
Similar species: Sceloporus occidentalis: Smaller in size, with less pointed dorsal scales; lacks yellow or tan dorsal coloration; lacks black partial neck collar.
Additional notes: A desert species that barely makes it to the Pacific slope in Los Angeles County. Recently found along the lower Sweetwater River in San Diego County, although this population is probably introduced.
