Fire and Invasive Annual Grasses in Western Ecosystem

A project funded by the Joint Fire Science Program

Soil seedbanks are being grown out in the greenhouse to assess community composition and diversity. Soil samples are collected between the months of September and November, prior to the first winter precipitation event. Rocks larger than 1/4 inch in diameter are sifted out and vermiculite is added to soil and individual soil pots are randomly placed in a greenhouse for germination treatments.

Treatments
Treatments include four watering cycles each followed a dry cycle. The first two treatments consist of water. The third treatment adds nitrogen to the water. The fourth treatment of gibberellic acid has been shown to stimulate germination.

Data
Data is collected as soon as the cotyledons are large enough to differentiate. Individual plants are observed and photographed throughout all stages of development. Plants are keyed out to species, pressed, mounted, and stored in a herbarium.
