This project represents the first phase in the development of a comprehensive inventory and monitoring program for terrestrial vertebrates within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. As a pilot project, researchers experimented with various survey methodologies, trapping efforts, and plot locations to improve the effectiveness of monitoring in the years to come. Therefore, users of this data should not make absolute comparisons between years, locations, or habitat types without a better understanding of the relative trapping effort. For example, the coastal scrub habitat type was sampled more often than the broad-leaf evergreen forest habitat type. Thus, a larger absolute number of species in the coastal scrub habitat does not necessarily mean that there is a greater species richness when compared to the broad-leaf evergreen habitat. Species richness can be compared, however, by looking at the average number of species captured per ten day trapping period. If you have additional questions as to the limitations of this data set, please contact the Golden Gate Field Station at 415-331-0847.
