WERC Highlights -- January 2000

Giant Sequoias Again in the News: USGS scientist Nate Stephenson was interviewed on January 13 by Mark Grossi of the Fresno Bee for a feature about giant sequoia research and management in California's Sierra Nevada. Due to fire suppression, giant sequoias, the world's largest trees, have experienced an unprecedented failure in reproduction during this century. The feature will discuss alternative management strategies used by different agencies to restore sequoia reproduction, and the research used to guide these strategies. (Nate Stephenson, Three Rivers, CA, 559-565-3176)

Giant Sequoia Research to be Featured on Discovery News: USGS scientist Nate Stephenson was interviewed on January 11 by Mark Miano of Discovery News for a feature about giant sequoia research in California's Sierra Nevada. The interview focused on what giant sequoia tree ring research has revealed about past climates, fires, and giant sequoia reproduction. Due to fire suppression, giant sequoias, the world's largest trees, have experienced an unprecedented failure in reproduction during this century. The use of prescribed fire to restore sequoia reproduction will be discussed in the feature. (Nate Stephenson, Three Rivers, CA, 559-565-3176)
