An international team from U. S. Geological Survey (Western Ecological Research Center,
Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and
Alaska Science Center), United Nations-FAO, Chinese Academy of
Sciences (Institute of Zoology, and Wuhan Institute of Virology), University of New Hampshire (Complex Systems Research Center),
and Poyang Lakes National Nature Reserve
initiated a project satellite-marking ducks at Poyang Lake to track their movements and migration routes in March 2007. The objective
of the study is to learn more about migratory bird movements from this region and to document areas with exposure to HP H5N1. Three
species of ducks will be selected for the study from among common waterfowl species at Poyang Lake including include common teal,
spot-billed ducks, mallards, pintails, and ruddy shelduck. Local movements will help to document interactions of poultry and wild
birds at Poyang, while migratory movements will indicate which areas are linked to this region. |
