Wild Birds and Emerging Diseases: Modeling Avian Influenza Transmission Risk Between Domestic and Wild Birds in China

Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve
Where are the Birds?

Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve is the largest saline lake in northwest China, and the site of a major outbreak of HP H5N1 in wild waterfowl in 2005. In March and April 2007, an international team from U. S. Geological Survey (Western Ecological Research Center, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and Alaska Science Center), United Nations-FAO, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Computer Network Information Center, Institute of Zoology, Microbiology, Virology, and NW Institute of Qinghai Plateau Biology), and Qinghai Lakes National Nature Reserve developed a project satellite-marking bar-headed geese and ruddy shelducks at Qinghai Lake to track their movements and migration routes. The objective of this study is to examine the movement of migratory birds from the area where a H5N1 outbreak has occurred.
