Planning for Biodiversity:
Bringing Research and Management Together
Southern California contains some of the most diverse habitats of any landscape in North America and is recognized as a major center of biodiversity. It is also home to an ever-expanding human population, with needs for land, water, resources, and recreation that conflict directly with the habitat requirements of many species. As a result, this region has more endangered and threatened species than any other area in the continental United States, and once-extensive natural communities, many of which are unique to the ecoregion, have been reduced to mere remnants. It is thus essential to manage available resources to maximize biodiversity in remaining habitats while providing opportunities for other appropriate uses of the land. This symposium will bring together scientists and resource managers to address these issues.
OBJECTIVE
To identify current status of, and knowledge gaps in our understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem processes, present and future threats to species and habitats, and effective monitoring management strategies for southwestern and central coastal California.
PRODUCT
A peer reviewed publication that will document the current state-of-the-art science, identify knowledge gaps, and provide a synthesis of research strategies to improve our understanding of the biology and management of biodiversity in southern California.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This symposium is ideal for land and resource managers, scientists and researchers, local decision makers, and fire specialists.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
Gain insights, discuss the latest research, share
your results, and contribute to development of sound monitoring strategies
for the region.
