Pacific Coast Fisheries GIS Resource Database

 - Included Fisheries Data -

The following are spatial and tabular fisheries-related data included as part of the fisheries geodatabase:

California Fishing Blocks

California Fishing Reporting Blocks

The CA_Blks feature class used in the fisheries geodatabase is based on the California Department of Fish and Game's "caltrawl" and "Long-Trawl Blocks" shapefiles. These reporting blocks are used by fishermen and fish buyers to designate fish catch locations. Each fishing block has a "Block ID" which is used to tie that spatial location with associated records inside the Commercial Fishing, Sport Fishing, Historical Sport Fishing, and Recreational Fishing Survey data tables in the fisheries geodatabase.

California Commercial Areas

California Commercial Fisheries Data (1972 - 2009)

This table contains summarized data derived from California commercial landings receipts, collected by the California Department of Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Statistical Unit. These data have been summarized by Year, Month, Species, Gear, Port, and Block Number. All of the blocks included in the California Fishing Reporting Blocks feature class have commercial fishing data associated with them.

California Sport Fishing Areas

California Sport Fishing Data (1980 - 2009)

This dataset contains summarized sport fishing data derived from California Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) logbooks. These data have been summarized by Year, Month, Species, and Block Number.

California Historical Sport Fishing Areas

California Historical Sport Fishing Data (1936 - 2008)

This version of CPFV data contains information from historical logbook archives that were put into an electronic, summarized format by Kevin Hill and Niklas Schneider.  Data summary is by Year, Month, and Block.  Calculated values for fishing effort (number of anglers and hours fished) are also included.

California Recreational Fisheries Onboard Survey Areas

California Recreational Fisheries On-board Survey Data (CRFS and MRFSS, 1999 - 2009)

This dataset contains summarized data derived from the California Recreational Fisheries Survey (CRFS) and the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS). These data have been summarized by Year, Month, and Species.  Locations have been generalized to the CA Fishing Blocks (CA_Blks) to meet RecFIN confidentiality requirements.

Southern California Reefs Fish Survey Area

Southern California Reefs Fish Survey Data (1996 - 2009)

Between 1995 and 2009, the UC Santa Barbara Marine Science Institute conducted fish surveys on the sea floor throughout the Southern California Bight. These data contain fishcounts from habitats that include rocky reefs, soft sea floors, and rock outcrops.

Oil and Gas Production Platforms

Southern California Reefs Fish Survey Data: Oil and Gas Production Platforms (1996 - 2009)

A subset of the above Marine Science Institute fish count surveys, this data corresponds to dives at platforms only.

Oregon and Washington Fishing Reporting Blocks

The ORWA_Blks feature class is based on the reporting blocks map included with the WA-OR-CA Trawl Logbook. It is used in the fisheries geodatabase to associate catch location information spatially for Oregon and Washington commercial fishing, as well as Oregon shrimp, nearshore, and MRFSS data.

Oregon and Washington Commercial Fishing Reporting Blocks

Oregon and Washington Commercial Fishing Data (1987 - 2009)

This dataset contains summarized data derived from Oregon and Washington commercial receiving tickets, collected by the Oregon Department of Fish Wildlife and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. To protect confidential information, these data have been summarized by Month, Year, 10-Minute Fishing Block, Management Group, and Complex.  Additionally, these data have been summarized using a three-minimum-vessel rule to ensure no confidential fishing information is disclosed. A summary by year has also been included with more specific species information.

Oregon Shrimp Fishing Areas

Oregon Commercial Shrimp and Nearshore Fishing Logbook Data (1996 - 2008)

Summarized Oregon commercial shrimp and nearshore catch data derived from fishing logbooks. The State of Oregon requires captains of fishing vessels to complete these logbooks to document all fishing effort. To protect confidential information, these data have been summarized by Month, Year, Species, 10-Minute Fishing Block, and Gear Type.  Additionally, these data have been summarized using a three-minimum vessel rule to ensure no confidential fishing information is disclosed. A summary by year has also been included.

Oregon Marine Recreational Fisheries Areas

Oregon Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS) On-board Data (1999 - 2009)

This dataset contains summarized data derived from the Oregon Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS). MRFSS data are based on sampling surveys designed to gather marine recreational finfish catch and effort information from anglers.

Washington Marine Fish-Shellfish and Catch Reporting Areas

Washington Marine Fish-Shellfish Management and Catch Reporting Areas

This modified version of Washington's reporting areas has been edited along the coast to follow the base layers included in the fisheries geodatabase. Historic blocks that occur in the data have also been added. Some of these overlap, which can make selections visually confusing. Overlapping blocks include: 59 = 59A1 + 59A2 + 59B; 59A = 59A1 + 59A2; 60A = 60A1 + 60A2. Blocks 57 and 58 do not have any associated data and are turned off by default in the fisheries ArcMap document.

Washington Pink Shrimp Reporting Areas

Washington Pink Shrimp Data (1970 - 2009)

Summarized commercial pink shrimp catch data derived from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's fish ticket database. To protect confidential information, these data have been summarized by Month, Year, Species, Catch Area, and Gear Type.  Additionally, these data have been summarized, using a three-minimum vessel rule to ensure no confidential fishing information is disclosed.
